Worse yet, often there's no doctor on-site to oversee the "technicians" handling the MedSpa's laser hand-pieces, needles and other equipment. (Federal law does not require that the doctor sponsoring the MedSpa be present during operating hours.)
Now that's risky business!
These Are Medical Procedures
What's gotten lost in the hype is this: many elective rejuvenation treatments are, in fact, medical procedures. They should only be performed under the care of properly trained and credentialed medical professionals.
A Matter of Trust
Patients entrust me with their faces, and I take this responsibility seriously.
That's why I take a hands-on approach. I perform almost all of the rejuvenation treatments at The Lawler Centre myself. (See the attached article for exceptions.) So while we offer many of the services you'll find at a MedSpa - including the fractional laser for wrinkle reduction, injectable dermal fillers such as Radiesse and Juvederm, and Botox injections - here they're performed by me, not a spa technician.
Seeking these services from a board-certified plastic surgeon makes good sense.
It's Not a Slam-Dunk
The truth is, you can't learn enough about facial anatomy, skin chemistry and the other disciplines required to understand facial skin rejuvenation at a weekend seminar (or by watching your boss administer treatments for a few months).

Whenever cellular structure is altered (and that's what real skin rejuvenation requires - altering cellular structure), skill and knowledge are needed to anticipate outcomes. |
My Personal Care
This is about more than the years I spent in medical school, general surgery residency and plastic surgery residency. This is about the fact that I study, day after day, how a variety of skin treatments affects a range of complexion types, ages and conditions. There's no substitute for constant research, practice and observation.
Proficiency Comes with Experience
A staffer who's been delegated a couple of procedures just doesn't develop the same sensitivity to skin changes as someone who works with the whole panoply of medical equipment, year in and year out, solving medical problems as well as cosmetic ones.
Nuances Versus Generics
When I set out to rejuvenate your face, I imagine how your dermal structure will be affected by all of the tools I have available to me.
I come up with a plan. Then I apply these tools in a unique combination that addresses your particular facial type, skin type, aging issues, etc.
When it comes to the long-term care of your skin, there's simply no comparison between that and ordering a la carte at a MedSpa.
The Beauty of "Enough"
There's a particularly important skill to injecting fillers. The goal is to utilize just enough to help someone look refreshed, not overly "done" (remember the Goldie Hawn character's impossibly plumped lips in the movie "First Wives' Club"?). Achieving this symmetry and balance takes extensive clinical training, experience and product knowledge.
Product Knowledge
Speaking of product knowledge - this, too, is a vitally important consideration. Not all dermal fillers are created equal - most are FDA-approved only for certain areas of the face or body (for example, Radiesse is NOT approved for injection into the lips or under the eyes). So when it's my medical license on the line, you can rest assured that the products and procedures I utilize are used appropriately.
Get What You Pay For
I also believe that if you're spending $500 or $1,000 on a syringe of an FDA-regulated substance that's being injected into your face, you deserve to have an experienced, board-certified physician doing the injecting. Wouldn't you agree?
The Doctor Is Always In
There are certain services we offer as part of my practice that are performed by members of my staff. They are fully trained and qualified to perform these procedures (see article below). But rest assured that if you have a question and want to talk with me, I'm always here. So while we offer MedSpa services, this is - first and foremost - a medical practice.
And the doctor is always in.
