Over the past year, more and more men have come to my consultation room to ask how I can improve their appearance. It's part of a national trend. Today men account for:
14% of all Botox injections
15% of all liposuction and eyelid surgeries
24% of all nose jobs
The need to appear youthful and dynamic well into their 40's, 50's and 60's is making men re-think their attitudes toward cosmetic procedures.
Some of my male clients are referred by their wives and girlfriends; others are referred by their mirrors. Still others arrive after a wake-up call from an executive search firm. In today's challenging economy, looking young, fit and ready for the big time can make the difference between getting the job and stagnation.
The top procedures for men in the United States are:
#1
Liposuction to reduce fatty deposits
#2
Rhinoplasty (nose surgery)
#3
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
#4
Botox treatments
In order of popularity, then—
LIPOSUCTION
Many a man has run and swum and lifted weights only to find that exercise alone can't reshape the body nature gave him.
There's no magic bullet, but there is liposuction— the cosmetic procedure men request most. Using the latest liposuction technology, I can literally vacuum out the persistent pockets of accumulated fat that obliterate athletic contours. An advanced technique called Smart Lipo even lets me tighten the loose skin left behind after fat deposits are removed.
“Male breasts” – An embarrassing but fairly common condition called gynecomastia, is the most common problem for which men seek liposuction. This genetic trait deposits fat on the pectoral muscles. Large male breasts are first seen in adolescent boys, and then in men 40 and older.
“Love handles” – Cute name, but nobody really loves that extra flab in the waist area.
Abdominals – Definition returns when we remove the “beer belly.”
Pouchy necks and double chins – The “doughy” look is among the earliest signs of aging.
THE EYES - TAKE MY BAGS PLEASE
You've got to look alert, engaged, competent. But you've got “bedroom eyes.” They were an asset in your youth, but once you hit 40 or 50 they just made you look tired and world-weary.
Eye surgery can tighten and open droopy upper lids, and get rid of droopy bags under the eyes as well. It's one of the most common and safe plastic surgery procedures we do.
Want your eyes to look younger, more alert? Done.
THE HEART OF THE FACE - THE NOSE
Right smack in the center of your face—your nose either complements your other features or fights them. It's the most common feature people—male or female—want to “fix.”
A clumsy or crooked nose can make it hard for people to see the real you.
I can refine your nose, and in the process, transform your whole face.
Athletes of the high school, college or weekend-warrior variety—a nose broken recently or long ago needn't follow you to the grave. Rhinoplasty can restore the familiar face in the yearbook.
I have the education and experience to treat cosmetic, traumatic, and functional nasal problems.
BOTOX: A SMOOTH MOVE
Nothing says “old, tired, and worried” like crow's feet, frown lines and a corrugated forehead. Botox targets the creases that add years to your face. By temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, Botox makes you look younger, more vigorous and confident.
In the meantime, it stops new wrinkles from forming.
And speaking of confidence—when excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is a problem, Botox can turn off the faucet in your armpits. That could salvage a job interview right there!
Who would have thought, 20 years ago that plastic surgeons would become part of the male grooming equation? But life changes, and we must change with the times.
If you have any questions about male cosmetic surgery, I welcome them. I'm here to help.
