The Skin-Only Tummy Tuck
A Lighter Procedure for a Smaller Problem
It’s high summer. Many of you are at the
beach, on the tennis courts, out hiking, or just enjoying your own back
yards with family and friends.
For some of you, our delightful bare-it-all weather has become a mixed blessing.
Warm-weather spoilers:
- Having to shop for pyramid-shaped tops to hide the loose, sagging skin on your abdomen.
- Shopping for one-piece swimsuits – when most of your friends are still wearing bikinis.
- Giving up on low-riding pants and skirts because they reveal a wrinkled midriff.
Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to deal with this problem?
The truth is, you don’t. There’s a procedure we do called a skin-only
tummy tuck. It’s designed for people – usually younger women in their
30s and 40s – who have toned abdominal muscles but loose skin.
How have they gotten that way? The most common causes are:
- Pregnancy
Some women’s belly skin stretches so much it never goes back to where
it was before pregnancy. After the delivery they tone their muscles back
into shape, but the skin doesn’t follow.
- Extreme weight loss
Bariatric surgery – or just pure will power! – results in a blessed
loss of midriff inches. But inelastic skin (either genetic or
age-related) leaves redundant skin behind.
There are no skin-tightening lasers that can solve this problem.

| The Upside and the Downside |

Don’t get depressed about this. There’s an upside to your belly getting all ugly. Namely, the rest of you still looks good!
The downside is that the problem is not going away. It will only get worse as the years go by. So why not deal with it now?
A skin-only tummy tuck is the answer. It will restore the flat, perfect tummy you used to have – and let you keep all the great clothes you wear to show it off.
The skin-only tummy tuck is less invasive than a full tummy tuck.
- The incision is smaller
- The “abs” muscles are left intact. They aren’t the problem here
- It removes both extra skin and accumulated fat
- The procedure generally preserves your belly button
As a part of this procedure, the tissues
over the underlying muscles can be tightened, but this part is optional.
For patients anticipating another pregnancy, I simply omit this part.
You get a little less of a result, but it eliminates any concern about
the muscles being too tight for future pregnancies.
Why not come in for a consultation? I can give you all the details
about this procedure, including how long it takes and how long you’ll be
out of circulation.
You may want to think about scheduling the surgery for after Labor
Day, maybe in October. The weather’s so enchanting right now. I’m sure
you don’t want to interrupt your summer fun.

Whatever
you do, don’t conveniently “forget” about your tummy problem once the
weather calls for bundling up again. Excess skin and fat usually turn
into a “pouch” that becomes visible in winter clothes, too. You’re
still young and vital. You can be enjoying your life thoroughly,
without self-consciousness. That includes a zestful appreciation of the
lovely body you were born with – every inch of it.
