I'm not that big on celebrities, but I find them useful for making points about plastic surgery. You can find their photos everywhere, and most of them have had small or large tweaks to put them "over the top" as gorgeous creatures who deserve our full attention.

Noses

Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is the most common type of facial surgery we plastic surgeons are asked to do, and it's for a good reason. Noses are make-it-or-break-it features. They're grasped in the same visual moment with the eyes and lips and they subliminally comment on both, sometimes magnifying, other times detracting from, their beauty.

I'll quote myself here: "Many faces are just one nose away from being exquisite." I've said that right here in this
e-newsletter.

Don't Believe Me?

I know that sounds farfetched to some people — especially those untrained in facial structure and the elements that create the impression of beauty. But it's true, and I've decided to prove it using celebrity examples.

Here are before-and-after photos of some of today's reigning beauties. They demonstrate what a well-wrought nose can do for a face. After you've studied them, I think you'll agree with me — a good nose can take an average face to the stratosphere.

Refining the Bridge

Our first study: Scarlett Johansson. What an extraordinary difference it made when she had the bridge of her nose refined. Johansson was born with a thick nose that simply wouldn't allow her other features to shine.

All it took to bring out the delicacy of her mouth and eyes was to create a delicate nose to go with them!

Delicacy Hidden – Delicacy Revealed

Bridge, Nostrils, Tip

Just refining a bridge isn't that common. The nostrils and the tip of the nose must match the bridge. That's why we commonly re-design the entire structure.

In the example below, you can see that it wouldn't have done Winona Ryder much good to have only the bridge of her nose narrowed. Her nose was so thick and wide it made all of her features look clumsy by association.

A Petite Face Needs a Petite Nose

Her new nose takes up much less space on her face and is exactly petite enough to complement her eyes and lips.

Two-Stage Reconstruction

The same can be said of Cameron Diaz. Everything else about her face was exquisite but her big pre-surgery nose had "ordinary" written all over it. Do you see how it brought down the character of her entire face? But once she had her nose re-shaped, everything fell beautifully into place.

Pretty Becomes Exquisite

Apparently she had the bridge refined first, then took care of the nostrils and tip at a later date. Live and learn.

From Pretty to "Can't Take Your Eyes Off Her"

The next two faces are different. We're not looking at noses that interfered with beauty, just noses that weren't making enough of a contribution.

Megan Fox and Halle Berry both had passable noses before surgery. Both women were pretty enough. But look at what happened after nose surgery: something was unleashed that makes you want to stare at them all day long.

This is what I'm talking about when I say that some faces are just one nose away from being exquisite.

Pretty to Exquisite

Hooked Nose

womanOne of the most common problems I'm asked to correct is the hooked nose. Very few women can overcome the ungainliness of a hooked or aquiline nose. There are some exceptions, and they're memorable, such as Angelica Houston.

But Ashlee Simpson simply didn't have the features, height or personality to carry off an aquiline nose. You have to admit her nose job was absolutely necessary before she could enter the realm of the celebrated and admired.

Not Going Anywhere with That Hook

My Life with Noses

Why am I so observant when it comes to noses?
  • Before attending medical school my passion was art history.

  • I have a lifelong interest in rhinoplasty. It was my primary focus as a young cosmetic surgeon.

  • I'm the first American physician to be triple board certified - in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Ear Nose & Throat Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery. Few doctors have my experience with both the form and function of this feature.

I see subtle distinctions other doctors miss.
Rely on My Background

Your perceptions about your nose and face may be skewed — it's difficult to be objective about yourself — but my wide experience and unique background are your assurance of a beautiful nose. Having done more than a thousand rhinoplasties, I can mold noses as easily as if I were a sculptor working with clay.

The Exact Right Nose

During a consultation, you and I can design the nose that perfectly complements your other features.

The Surgery
  • Outpatient procedure at a state-licensed, fully-accredited surgery center

  • General anesthesia

  • 1 to 2 hours in the operating room
Afterwards, you'll be bandaged and groggy, and will need a ride home.

The Recovery
  • Moderate swelling and bruising will last for 5-7 days.

  • Packing is removed before you leave the surgery center.

  • A small metal splint is placed on the outside of the nose for 4-6 days.

  • You may return to work or school after 5-7 days.

  • You may resume light exercise at 2 weeks.

  • You may resume vigorous exercise within 4-6 weeks.
As each month passes, you will notice gradual improvement. Within a couple of months you'll see what you've been hoping for: an alteration in your face's character.

You'll start congratulating yourself for making this investment in yourself. As people perceive you differently and treat you differently, you'll realize this has been one of the best decisions you've ever made.
