The New Mommy Makeover:
Getting your body back after Baby
“Mommy Makeover” used to be an article you’d read in a beauty or fashion magazine. The magazine would treat a drab, overworked mom to a day of pampering that included a professional hair re-styling, makeup by a makeup artist, and an outfit put together by a professional stylist to help the mom look great.
The magazine would feature her before/after photos, showing how fabulous the “new mom” looked after her makeover.
Why You Might Consider a Mommy Makeover
No woman would deny that pregnancy and childbearing wreak havoc with your body.
1. As a baby grows, it forces your uterus against the inside of the muscle wall of your abdomen. The two vertical muscles that hold in the tummy (the so-called “six pack muscles”) get stretched apart and elongate, resulting in a bulge that is still there after delivery and can’t be fixed with diet and exercise, no matter how many crunches you do and no matter how hard you diet. Only surgery can bring those muscles back together again.
2. If you enjoyed your larger breasts during pregnancy, you may be disappointed afterwards, when they sag and even become a size smaller than before your pregnancy! The result can be stretch marks and hanging breasts. You can’t exercise those away either.
3. Children are wonderful, but caring for a growing family can make it tough to stick to a workout schedule (not to mention the temptation to finish the kids’ peanut butter sandwiches or join them for fast food and pizza!). Beginning with the first few sleepless months after delivery and well into your children’s teenage years, your busy life can push your physical needs far into the background. The result can be weight gain, loss of muscle tone, and cellulite.

Shadows of Their Former Selves
Faces often get careworn, too, with the exhaustion and frustrations that raising kids can entail. “About the same time I was struggling with my weight, I also noticed that my eyelids had become droopy, and the skin on my brow had begun to sag,” commented a 38-year-old mother of four. “It gave me an aged, worried look."
|
She decided to get a browlift at the same time she got her tummy tuck, breast lift and liposuction. After she was healed she looked extraordinary. We added a regimen of routine facial maintenance and prescription-strength skincare, and now, she’s glowing.

"Today, 'Mommy Makeover' has taken on a whole new meaning. It’s not just hair and makeup anymoreit’s getting your
body back after childbearing."

Crisis Becomes an Opportunity
Another 35-year-old mother of 2 decided to turn the crisis of her sagging post-baby breasts into an opportunity. “I always wanted to be a full-breasted woman,” said this petite, 5’1” mom. When she came in for her Mommy Makeover, we added a breast augmentation to her tummy tuck. I have a fairly unique liposuction tummy tuck procedure that creates a very flat tummy. She told me afterwards that her breasts and stomach hadn’t looked this good even in her 20s.

Not Hard to See Why
Journalists and TV pundits looking for the “Why” behind this new trend come up with all kinds of reasons for it:
- Women have babies later in life their bodies get more out-of-control
- Career women need to look great when they go back to work
- Boomer women they won’t tolerate a saggy, post-partum look
It seems obvious to me that women are choosing the Mommy Makeover option in greater and greater numbers simply because they can. Medical advances have made plastic surgery safer and less painful than ever.

Once an advance in self-maintenance is taken up by the movie stars, it tends to spread throughout our culture. Mommy Makeovers are not just for the Demi Moore types now! I look for this trend to grow and become more and more commonplace.
